A World Where Everything Has Depth And Meaning

It never leaves you –
that entire life of choices
and missed chances.
They lurch around
in the back of your mind,
somewhere between
and all the projects
you left unfinished.

At first you barely notice,
you just retreat
to fantasy worlds
where everything has depth
and meaning.
Though eventually
the familiar patterns
turn to tedium.

Surging back to reality,
denial hits first,
then justification,
and lastly resentment,
as predictably as the tide.
So you make them a part of you
because it’s all you know,
and it softens the unfamiliar.

The days skim by
and time erodes a channel,
dousing the passion,
until you’re left
inhaling smoke
and drowning in cheap wine.
Anything to help dull the senses,
as you try to ignore the weight
forever growing in the
back of your mind.

The Days Bleed Together

The days bleed together –
streams of muted colour,
lamp yellow, sky blue,
all washing down
one canvas.

The fading days
divided by broken sleep
with only the flies for company.

Whisky through the night,
and a fridge as empty
as the hole in my shoes.

Two-minute noodles
and electronic music,
quietening the dark
as the colours deepen
and I try not to think of
the looming dawn
of another day.

When they aren’t
maddeningly silent,
as they often pretend,
I sit and I listen
trying to hear
what they have to say.
I write it down
and twist it
this way
and that,
trying to shape it
in to something
for their purposes.
I try to finish
before the irriating
little fellow
with the attitude arrives –
with his motion
and noise –
and forces me
in to myself
where there’s nothing to hear
except my own
